Here Are Some of the Best Hiking Trails in Maine

The Boothbay Region Land Trust Trails

One of Midcoast Maine’s best-kept secrets is the Boothbay Region Land Trust! The Land Trust isn’t exactly a trail, but rather a collection of nature preserves in Boothbay Harbor and neighboring Southport. This non-profit operates over 30 miles of wooded hiking trails in the area, all offering spectacular opportunities for exercising, wildlife viewing, and seeing the unique landscape. All year long, visitors may access any of the Land Trust’s preserves and trails for free.

Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve in Boothbay Harbor

One of the largest and most impressive preserves operated by the Boothbay Region Land Trust is the Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve. This 47-acre property consists of a variety of ecosystems including wetlands, fields, and forested uplands. All of the Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve trails offer prime opportunities for wildlife viewing, too. Over 140 species of birds have been seen here! Hike this preserve between spring and fall and you’ll see blankets of wildflowers attracting butterflies.

The Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve even has a secret: It was once a profitable ice-harvesting site! In the late 1800s, the stream traversing the preserve wetlands was dammed. This created a large lake that would freeze over each winter. The ice business hasn’t operated here since 1907, but the area remains an important habitat for beavers and the like.

Hendricks Head Preserve in Southport

One of the most popular Midcoast region hiking trails is the Hendricks Head Preserve! Located just over the swing bridge from Boothbay Harbor to Southport, this preserve combines the beauty of the beach with the tranquility of the woods for one of the best hikes in southern Maine! Pine forests, coastal cliffs, and quartz-filled rock are just a few of the special sights to discover along the Hendricks Head Trail, an easy half-mile hike.

Round Top Farm in Damariscotta

Venture just north of Boothbay Harbor for a visit to Round Top Farm, one of the most popular hiking spots in the Midcoast region! This recreational hub features trails that meander through open fields and past the Upper Damariscotta River shore. There are plenty of picnic tables and areas designated for viewing wildlife. An added bonus of taking a stroll at Round Top Farm is accessing the connector trail that leads to the Whaleback Shell Midden State Historic Site!
