The Ultimate Guide to Boating in Maine

Know Maine Boating Laws

It is always important to know the basic “rules of the road.” Before making the trip to the waters of beautiful Boothbay Harbor, know that Maine personal watercraft laws indicate the following:

  • All watercraft over 16 feet long must carry one lifejacket for each person aboard, plus one throwable floatation device.
  • A boat operator must be at least 12 and supervised by someone who is at least 16.
  • Boats registered in other states may operate for 60 days without being licensed in Maine.
  • One may not operate a watercraft on the inland waters of the state unless a Lake & River Protection Sticker is affixed to both sides of the watercraft.
  • Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.
