The History of Cabbage Island Clambakes
The story of Cabbage Island dates back to 1901 when Mr. Ezekiel Holbrook purchased the small island from his father, to whom the island was granted by the government of Massachusetts in the late 1800’s. Over the next 85 years, the island changed hands multiple times, seeing different owners add buildings, wells, and other essentials for inhabitants on the island. In 1986, Mr. Wayne Moore purchased the island, and, in partnership with his brother, began a new business venture: Cabbage Island Clambakes. The experience has been a huge hit and offers a fun way to experience a classic Maine tradition.
A Classic Maine Clambake: How-To
Start your Cabbage Island Clambake adventure on board the Bennie Alice with a tour of Boothbay Harbor. There, you’ll work up your hunger and arrive at Cabbage Island for the clambake tradition. Cooked in seaweed and steamed, covered in rocks, these bright red lobsters will have your mouth watering. Accompanying the delicious staple, a hot cup of their famous fish chowder, steamed clams, corn on the cob, onion, and potatoes make this Downeast tradition delectable. Finish it off with delicious blueberry cake and hot coffee or tea.
Explore Cabbage Island
Virtually anywhere on Cabbage Island, there is a wonderful view.
