The Significance of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

Commissioned by President John Quincy Adams in 1827, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was poorly constructed to begin with, as the original edifice crumbled within years. It was later rebuilt in 1835, solving a problem with the mortar–a matter of saltwater versus fresh. It stands the test of time, though, now, as a revered monument of Maine’s maritime heritage. It’s even on the state quarter!

How to Visit the Lighthouse

For just $2 admission, you can step back into Maine history like nowhere else. Tour the lighthouse, the Fisherman’s Museum, take advantage of the photo opportunities and soak up the history there. The lighthouse is a must-see here in Boothbay Harbor!

Spend the Afternoon at Pemaquid Beach

Pemaquid Beach Park is a local favorite! Amenities to make your time there more convenient include changing rooms, shower rooms, outdoor showers, a beach shop, snack shack, a community room with a full kitchen, and a fun nature center! A fun way to experience the nature surrounding Pemaquid Beach State Park is in the Beachcombers’ Rest nature center, in partnership with the Pemaquid Watershed Association. The nature center offers an insider’s look into the ecology of the area. Exploration events are available for the kids, too. There, they will explore the ecosystem of tide pools, investigate sea glass, see wildlife up-close, and join in sand castle contests!
