Some of Our Favorite Things to Do in Maine When it Rains

See Colorful Fish at the Maine State Aquarium

For little ones who are fascinated with sea creatures, a visit to the Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor can be an exciting experience! The exhibits here allow children and adults alike to see sharks, stroke spiny sea urchins, and marvel at a massive 20-pound lobster! Families can visit between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. May through September. Adults enter for $7 and kids up to 12 years old enter for $3. Children two and under enter for free. This is one of the best things to do in Boothbay Harbor with kids — rain or shine!

Enjoy a Cold Beer at the Boothbay Craft Brewery

Sometimes, there’s no better way to spend a rainy day than making memories with friends and family over drinks. The Boothbay Craft Brewery is an excellent choice for a frothy brew or two! This brewery closes in December, after the annual Festival of Lights and Gardens Aglow events take place, and reopens each spring. When in season, this spot brews and serves four signature beers Thursday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Three IPAs and one Lager are reliable choices that are always on tap, but there are usually several other seasonal picks, too.

Boothbay Brewery’s popular Thirsty Botanist IPA is just one example!

Learn About Nautical History at the Maine Maritime Museum

The Maine Maritime Museum is located on a scenic 20-acre property on the banks of the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. No matter the weather, this popular museum encourages a public appreciation for the region’s thriving maritime culture. The museum is home to multiple indoor exhibits, an outdoor shipyard full of intriguing vessels, educational programs, narrated sea excursions, and more. There’s something for all ages! Another nearby museum worth exploring is the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College.
