History of the Lighthouse

The Burnt Island Lighthouse first shined in 1821, but it was 1857 before keeper’s quarters were built. Other structures were added through the years including boathouses in 1880, a fuel house in 1886, and an oil house in 1899. The lighthouse was automated in 1988 and still operates today.

Tours aboard the Novelty are available Monday and Thursday only from July 6 to August 24. Custom tours are available.

Take the two-and-a-half hour tour of the Burnt Island Lighthouse, and a living history exhibit features the life of the keeper as he explains the lighthouse’s history and functions.
