Here Are the 3 Best Lobster Shacks in Maine
Red’s Eats
Nestled at the foot of Wiscasset’s Main Street for 81 years, Red’s Eats is the most famous restaurant on Route 1 in Maine. It is a bit of enchantment on a sunny day – part summer-stock theater, part religious pilgrimage, all unfolding outdoors in a leafy nineteenth-century village on the back of the beautiful, tidal Sheepscot River. “You can feed anyone once, but feed them twice and you’re doing something right!” The freshly picked Maine lobster meat is piled high and sits on a grilled hotdog bun; Red’s knows how to do lobster rolls!
Dunton’s Dog House
Dunton’s Dog House has been a family favorite for years. This locally owned, no-frills shack serves all manner of Maine comfort food. They serve hot dogs, chili dogs, hamburgers, and clam chowder. The true star of this spot, however, is Dunton’s famous lobster roll. Made with light mayonnaise and plenty of fresh lobster, there’s nothing quite like it! Despite its minimal appearance, Dunton’s Dog House offers street parking and outdoor seating. For visitors who don’t care much for pomp and circumstance, this popular spot is a great choice.
Note: This popular spot is open seasonally.
Bet’s Famous Fish Fry
For visitors who have had their fill of lobster rolls, Bet’s Famous Fish Fry is the perfect place to visit on the way to Boothbay Harbor. Keep an eye out for a colorful, hand-painted shack on the left side of Route 27. Though the menu is limited to fish sandwiches, “fish in a dish,” and french fries, it’s difficult to find fresher selections anywhere else. In fact, the owner herself catches the haddock fresh and delivers it to customers in huge portions! We recommend choosing a picnic table behind the shack and digging in. Whatever visitors order, they’ll encounter Bet’s booming Downeast personality and a simple, delicious meal.
Note: This popular spot is open seasonally and only takes cash.
Robinson’s Wharf
Not a shack, but rather a wharf, locals know that there is no best time for lobster in Maine; restauranteurs harvest this favorite food year-round! For both seasonal and off-season visitors, Robinson’s Wharf is a great choice. Stop by and savor a lobster salad, lobster and crab fondue, bowl of lobster bisque, or a lazy lobster. This popular restaurant also has a kids’ menu and a full bar. Want to create your own dish? Robinson’s Wharf has a seafood market, where visitors can purchase and take home fresh lobster.
