Become an Explorer: Plan a Visit to Monhegan Island

Sitting on 20 acres of incredible Midcoast Maine land, Linekin Bay Resort is filled with a wealth of adventure. Guests who book their stay at our waterfront resort have several land and water activities right at their fingertips without leaving the property. However, if you’re looking to get out and explore the Boothbay Harbor area, there are plenty of incredible outings to embark on. For a truly memorable experience, set off to spend a day on Monhegan Island.

How to Get to Monhegan Island

The only way to reach this Maine island is by boat. You can make the journey on your own boat but need to contact the harbor master ahead of time on channel 19 or by calling 207-542-9345. The most popular mode of transportation is by taking the ferry. Three ports reach the island: Port Clyde, Boothbay Harbor, and New Harbor, all of which have parking for cars available.

Balmy Day Cruises is the best option for guests at our Boothbay Harbor resort. This cruise service offers daily runs from June through October, and you need to book each leg of the trip separately. Once you arrive, you’ll have about four hours to explore the island, which means you need to be selective in your adventures when on the island. Many travelers make several visits to Monhegan Island to experience all there is to do and see.

A Checklist of the Best Things to Do on the Island

While this island is less than a square mile in area, it is filled with exciting and memorable things to do. When researching what to do on Monhegan Island, you’ll find everything from shopping to hiking and more.

  1. Surround yourself with stunning scenery as you explore the nine miles of hiking trails found on the island that lead to the highest ocean cliffs on the state’s coastline. You can download a trail map online or purchase one at the island shop.
  2. Do a bit of shopping at local stores to find the perfect keepsake. The variety of charming boutiques includes art galleries and gift shops.
  3. View incredible works of art at the Monhegan Museum of Art & History. Every year, this space presents an exhibition from a period of art history or a particular artist.

Other popular activities include visiting the Monhegan Island Lighthouse and grabbing a bite to eat at one of the island’s restaurants.
