Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum History
The Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum is a segment of Bowdoin College’s Arctic Studies program. The museum is located in the Bowdoin Hubbard Hall in Brunswick, ME. Donald B. Macmillan, a graduate of the college, donated the materials used for constructing the attraction. Macmillan was an avid Arctic researcher and colleague of renowned explorer Robert E. Peary.
Over the course of his 46-year career, Macmillan traveled over 300,000 miles, trained students, and charted new territory regarding the study of Arctic life and history in the Labrador and Greenland regions. He brought back photographs and even created a dictionary for Inuktikut, a language used by Arctic people in these parts. Now, all of Macmillan’s hard work shows in the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum!
What to Expect at the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum
From the moment visitors step into the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum, they are in a historical, Northern world. The exhibits change throughout the year, but they always feature exploration artifacts, equipment, traditional Inuit art, contemporary Inuit art, and information on Arctic animals and ecosystems. Current exhibits are centered around Inuit clothing and identity, hunters and herders in Northern Siberia, visions of birds in Inuit art, and Robert E. Peary’s explorations. There is something for everyone!
Admission is free to the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum, so it’s a great attraction for the whole family! It is open Tuesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Free tours are available for groups who want personal guidance through the museum. These educational tours are for any age group, from preschool to adult. Tours include narration of exhibits and hands-on activities. Kids and adults alike will love trying on Inuit snow goggles, playing with an ajugaq, and holding a walrus tusk!
