The Significance of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
Commissioned by President John Quincy Adams in 1827, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was poorly constructed to begin with, as the original edifice crumbled within years. It was later rebuilt in 1835, solving a problem with the mortar–a matter of saltwater versus fresh. It stands the test of time, though, now, as a revered monument of Maine’s maritime heritage. It’s even on the state quarter!
