A Checklist of Where to See Incredible Maine Nature

The nature preserves found throughout Midcoast Maine offer some of the best examples of how tranquil and breathtaking Maine nature can be. After watching the sunrise from one of our decks, pack up some snacks and set out exploring one of these three sites.

Penny Lake

Penny Lake Preserve is less than 10 minutes away on Townsend Avenue and is an excellent spot for wildlife viewing. Discover freshwater wetland, an open field, and adjoining woodlands. You’ll enjoy the half-mile loop trail featuring an apple orchard if you’re visiting with younger children.

Lobster Cove Meadow & Appalachee Preserve

The closest spot to our Boothbay Harbor resort is Appalachee Preserve and Lobster Cove Meadow. Lobster Cove comprises over 40 acres of forested uplands, wetlands, and fields. There are almost two miles of trails perfect for bird watching and hiking. The south end of this area connects to Appalachee Preserve, a 25-acre site on the shore of Appalacchee Pond. You can only reach this preserve by hiking.

Pine Tree

Boothbay Region Land Trust map of region walking trails from Edgecomb to Southport.

At 144 acres, Pine Tree Preserve has plenty of scenery to take in. Wander the mile-long loop trail. Roughly halfway around this trail is a logging road that goes for about a mile along the northern property line to create a two-mile hike. Keep your eyes open for the birds that call the trees home. You might just see an occasional moose or beaver as well.

There are several other preserves in the area, all part of the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Explore a new one each time you stay with us!
